Pastel Bottles
A still life unit in form, value and composition
Students learned to create a value scale and practiced shading a variety of values on contour line art drawings in pencil to give the illusion of form. Armed with the confidence that they could correctly shade objects, keeping in mind a light source, students learned to draw invented bottles using a 3-oval technique and by observing a collection of recyclable bottles, which served as reference material. Then, students learned about thumbnail sketching and drew multiple thumbnails of bottle groups that could be developed into a final still life composition. Four pastel techniques including shading, blending, scumbling and feathering were taught and practiced before students developed their own still life compositions of bottles in pastels. Students were also challenged to overlap at least one bottle and to demonstrate their abilities to correctly draw a still life composition in perspective via the placement and value of each bottle. (A unit on perspective had preceded this unit and Paul Cezanne’s still life compositions, that included bottles were highlighted.)
