Go Figure!
A 10-Lesson, Figure Making Unit

In this unit, students learned to draw and paint the human figure.  The lessons began with a basic understanding of anatomy, described in terms of idealized proportions and skeletal angles.  The lessons progressed and students modeled body mass, muscle and details considering a light source and shadows.  Further lessons explored capturing gestures in quick drawings and ink paintings.  Students were also exposed to the style of Henri Matisse’s “cut-outs” as well as the style of a variety of contemporary painters whose work's exaggerate figures.  In the final assessment, students were asked to create a figure and put it in a context using any technique they had learned.

The images below follow the progression of student work.
