Mixed Media Silhouettes
Layering was the key to creating mixed media figure silhouettes. Students rolled dabs of block print ink across heavy papers to develop backgrounds. Next, they drew figures engaged in some of the student's favorite activities, on poster paper. The figures were cut out, creating original stencils, on which acrylic paint could be brushed around or through the positive or negative spaces. The silhouettes became the focal points of the artworks. Personal messages were added with sharpies or oil pastels. Some students added watercolor drips and splatters to their stencils, which they also glued onto their works. More layers were added with patterned stencils, collaged painted paper, acrylic or watercolor paint, oil pastels and markers. The final images are rich with color, and layers of a variety of media and mark making, garnering dynamic interest throughout the works.
