Symmetrical Name Tiles

Can you see a student’s name in the tile on the right?  Inspired by the tiles of the Topkapi Palace Museum in Istanbul, students created a tile by drawing and repeating their names in a symmetrical way.  The spaces created were painted with the analogous colors of turquois, ultramarine blue and phthalo blue and green, indicative of the tiles in Instanbul.  Orange red was added as a highlight in keeping with the inspiration for the piece.  After the students completed their tiles, they worked together combining their art into one large, dynamic collaborative work that included about 70 tiles.  The collaborative work was exhibited at the South Woods Middle School Art Gallery and a portion was exhibited in the Syosset Public Library Art Show.
