Charcoal, Chalk Still Life Drawing
To Build Compositional Skills

How do artists become better at perceiving and responding to their surroundings?
High school students observed a display of possible objects to draw and learned to work at easels. They explored charcoal and chalk pastels and created balanced, unified still life compositions.
To achieve their goals, students used viewfinder frames or their fingers to identify the lines, angles, proportions, and positions of their selected objects as they related to each other. They focused on their light sources and rendered the forms using realistic colors and shading. Key color concepts were reviewed including how to create tints, shades and tones by adding white, black or grey to hues. Special care was given to suggest texture and detail.
