Modeling Asian Paper Lantern Traditions
to Explore Other Holiday Traditions
Sculpting and painting with light
What’s your favorite festivity or contemporary tradition? How do you celebrate it? Students were asked to explore some of their personal customs or family traditions and to craft a paper lantern based on one of their favorite celebrations. They viewed a slideshow of paper lantern traditions across Asia for inspiration and drew pencil mock-ups. These drawings were sculpted with wire or art straws considering structure and form. The structures were covered with translucent papers, considering a light source selected from a light string, flashing electronic candle, or glow stick. Students also learned about layering color and meaningful messages, viewing the contemporary works of Isamu Naguchi and Xu Bing among others. Some students added messages on their works with watercolor paint. Students presented their final works either suspended from the ceiling or on a pediments.
