Express Yourself Digitally
How does Andy Warhol use photographic portraits to convey his ideas?
Andy Warhol is famous for his Poloroid portraits of celebrities and unknown people whom he captured expressing a variety of emotions as exemplified in the artwork at right of Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter. He typically placed his subjects in front of a plain white backdrop which enabled him to focus on their facial expressions, and easily silkscreen his results in a myriad of bright colors.
Students learned to use some components of the Paint Program in their PC tablets, which allows them to quickly shoot and alter photographs in an illustrative way like Pop Artist Andy Warhol. Students could photograph themselves or a peer expressing any emotion, outline key areas with a curved line tool or stylus, and fill in the space with bright colors inspired by Andy Warhol. This lesson can be duplicated in Photoshop for users of Macs.
